Turning off padding options

By default, zero length records in BARR/PRINT390 output are padded with a blank space. Under some circumstances, this can cause problems for printers (for example, if font indexes are being sent in the data stream to a Xerox printer).

Complete the following steps to turn off the padding options for the specific printer.

  1. Add the NDHBPADR (Pad record) and NDHBPAD1 (Pad skip 1) fields to the Spool Window. These fields are located in the Data set header internal custom section.

  2. Double-click these fields for the specific printer and type N to disable padding.

  3. Print the document.

If changing the padding options does not improve the printing problem, have the printer technician recode the DJDE statements to optimize them, if possible. If changing the padding options solves the problem, you can create an override table to disable padding permanently.

Changing the channel printer address

Complete the following steps to change the channel printer address.

  1. Open the Printers folder.

  2. Right-click the defined printer and select Properties.

  3. From the Properties dialog box, select the Ports tab.

  4. Select the channel printer port from the list, and then click Configure Port.

  5. From the Channel address list, select the channel printer’s address. Click OK.

  6. Click Close to close the Properties dialog box.

Sending Xerox resource files to a Xerox laser printer

When sending resources to a Xerox laser printer, the resource files can be spooled using Print Utility or BARR/PRINT TCP/IP. On the Format tab, set the type of file to VBM and Xerox formats. Before the files are sent to the printer, follow these steps to verify that the correct IDEN settings for your printer have been entered in the software.

  1. At the Xerox console, take the printer offline Logically (or physically) disconnected and unable to communicate with the host computer. by typing OFF.

  2. Confirm the logon level is 3 at the Xerox printer by typing LOG 3.

  3. Type TYPE followed by the name of the start JSL that will be used (for example, TYPE DFAULT.JSL).

  1. Make a note of the prefix string, skip, and offset. See the following example.

IDEN PREFIX='$DJDE',SKIP=10,OFFSET=1,OPRINFO=NO;

A prefix preceded by an A indicates that the character string will be sent as ASCII.

  1. Open the Printers folder on the computer where the Barr software is installed.

  2. Right-click the BARR/PRINT390 printer and choose Properties.

  3. From the Device Settings tab, click Xerox IDEN Parameters and match the IDEN settings with the information you obtained from your printer. You can now receive the resources into the Spool Window and print them as normal jobs.

Using "tick marks" on an Océ channel printer

To use tick marks on an Océ channel printer, you must send an ending overlay containing the following three hexadecimal commands to the Océ printer.

Create an overlay file in the Barr host format using the following hexadecimal data, with trailing null bytes if desired. This overlay file must be named with a .tnj extension and be placed in the ending overlay folder (\\Program Files\Barr\Spooler\Overlay\END).

Barr PCI adapter compatibility

New computers now ship with 64-bit PCI slots, rather than 32-bit PCI slots. All Barr PCI adapters have 32-bit PCI edge connectors. The newer 64-bit PCI slots are generally compatible with 3.3 volt 32-bit PCI adapters. All Barr PCI adapters, including BARR/SYNC, CHANNEL IN, CHANNEL OUT, and CHANNEL INTELLIGENCE adapters Revision 2.0 or higher are 3.3 volt compatible PCI adapters and should work in 64-bit PCI slots. To determine if your Barr adapter is a 3.3 volt PCI adapter, remove and examine the BARR PCI adapter's edge connector. PCI adapters that are 3.3 volt compatible will have two notches in the PCI edge connector. Older 5 volt PCI adapters will have only one notch in the edge connector and will not fit into a newer 64-bit PCI slot.

If you have an older PCI adapter that will not work in a 64 bit PCI slot, please contact our Sales Department for quote to upgrade to a newer PCI adapter. This upgrade replacement is not covered by your Barr Annual Service Agreement (ASA).
