3. Documentation and Editing Conventions

BARR/3270 conventions for representing screens, your responses, commands, and selections are described in the following sections. These easy-to-learn conventions help you learn the operation of BARR/3270 quickly.


3.1 Documentation Conventions

Screen messages DOS or BARR/3270 messages that appear on your screen are enclosed in a box like the one below. Characters you would type or the option you would select from the screen are underlined in the box.

Typing When we ask you to type a command, you must also subsequently press the ENTER key to complete the command. We show the command in the same typeface as shown in the box.

Selecting When you select an option, move the cursor to that option and press ENTER.

3.2 Cues

BARR/3270 documents itself on the screen. All screens in BARR/3270 give cues in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen indicating what keystrokes or types of fields may be entered. The cues change with each field.

The table below lists the cues seen in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.

Any key

Read the information on the screen and press any key.

Selection

Use the arrows to move through the screen. Move to the desired selection and press ENTER. A shortcut to selecting an option is to type the initial character of the option name (highlighted on the screen).

Choice? + -

Use the plus or minus sign to toggle through choices.

Enter character

Type character.

Enter number

Type number.

Enter hex number

Type hexadecimal number using the digits 0-9 and A-F.

3.3 Keys

Use of the keys in the table below are common to all screens. You will not always see a cue at the bottom right-hand corner of the screen, but you can always use these keys. Key names appear bold in the text.

↑↓  |← →|

Up arrow, down arrow, and tab keys move among fields to be edited.

→ ←

Right and left arrows move among fields and within fields.

Del

Deletes current character.

Esc

Escape key returns fields to original values and returns to the next outer screen.

Enter

Enter key finishes entry of data on the screen and advances to the next screen.
