The Operation screen contains all the functions the operator needs to complete communication tasks. It is used to quit the program and perform advanced operations.
The possible selections from the Operation screen are briefly described in the following table:
Quit
The Quit screen disconnects from host, exits to DOS, or restarts BARR/3270.
Advanced
These options assign Source to Destination devices; change sessions between OPER, DOS, and 3270; and diagnose problems.
These selections and their uses are described in this chapter.
The Quit screen terminates the current communication and exits to DOS or restarts BARR/3270.
Disconnect then Exit to DOS
Disconnect then Exit to DOS is the reverse of Logon. BARR/3270 will disconnect from the host after all files finish printing and current input files are completely sent. With this selection, the following procedure automatically begins:
BARR/3270 sends the Request Disconnect.
BARR/3270 waits for all tasks to be completed. That includes printing and receiving files to disk.
BARR/3270 then exits to DOS.
This is the preferred method to terminate BARR/3270.
Exit to DOS
BARR/3270 abruptly terminates and exits to DOS. It does not wait for the printer to finish.
Restart communications
When you select Restart communications, BARR/3270 immediately terminates without waiting for the printer to finish and restarts BARR/3270 as if you just entered the program.
Escape
Select Escape to return to the Operation screen. You may also quit from within a 3270 session. See Section 9.2.
Advanced operations assign sources of files to destinations of files, enter other sessions, or diagnose problems.
Select Advanced.
Even though you have assigned devices in the Installation Description (Section 5.5), BARR/3270 also allows device assignment from the Advanced screen. This way you can assign Source devices to Destination devices at any time during operation. Changes made during operations are in effect until you exit the program. The values entered in the Installation Description are the defaults when you next resume communications.
Sessions allows you to go to other sessions that may be active while BARR/3270 is executing, including Operations, DOS, and 3270. Select Sessions to go to this screen:
Ctrl-Alt-O goes directly to the Operations session and Ctrl-Alt-D goes to DOS. Ctrl-Alt-Space may also be used at any time to list the sessions. If you press any key, the list of sessions that may be entered will be displayed at the bottom of the screen.
OPER
The Operations session communicates with the host computer. The screen shows the status line, console messages, and the Operations screen.
DOS
If you select the DOS session, you can work in DOS without exiting BARR/3270 or affecting your communication session.
You will see the following screen:
Type exit at the DOS prompt to return to BARR/3270.
Most programs that use standard DOS functions will work. Programs that turn off interrupts for extended periods of time, programs that use the same interrupts as BARR/3270, or large programs will not work. This feature is available only with DOS 3.0 and later versions.
1
The first character of the default name of the first 3270 session. Up to four 3270 sessions will be shown on this screen; default names are 1, 2, 3, and 4.
If you select this option, you will see
BARR/3270 diagnostic features for testing communications functions are reached from the Diagnostics screen. Hopefully you will never need to use this capability. Chapter 10 completely describes diagnostic procedures.
Select Escape to return to the Operation screen.
