Troubleshooting

This topic contains solutions to common problems that you might experience with BARR/PRINT CHANNEL for IPDS.

Unable to run hardware diagnostics

Cause: The adapter is currently being used by one or more connections. All connections using the adapter must be stopped before you can run hardware diagnostics.

Solution: Stop all connections using the adapter, and then run hardware diagnostics again.

The connection is not responding

Cause: An incorrect IP address or IP port number may have been specified. When this problem occurs, the connection will be started, but the channel state will remain Offline and the network state will be Disconnected.

Solution: Verify that the correct IP address and IP port number are specified on the Connection Configuration dialog box. Also, verify that the physical printer is ready.

The network state remains in the Pending state

Cause: The physical printer may not be ready, or it may be connected to another host. When this problem occurs, the connection will be started, but the channel state will remain Offline and the network state will be Pending.

Solution: Verify that the physical printer is ready. Also, verify that it is not in use by another host.

The network state continuously changes

Cause: If the network state continuously changes from Connected to Disconnected, and then to Pending, network polling has been inadvertently enabled. When this problem occurs, the connection will be started, and the channel state will either be Offline or Not Ready.

Solution: Select Disabled for the Network polling option on the Advanced Properties dialog box. This option should only be used by customers who use BARR/PRINT CHANNEL for IPDS in conjunction with the BARR/PRINT390 for IPDS module of the Barr Enterprise Print Server. The option must also be enabled in the BARR/PRINT390 for IPDS software.

Host reports there are no logical paths available

Cause: The channel device is not installed or configured correctly.

Solution: Verify the channel device is installed correctly; see the Adapter installation and settings errors topic. Verify that the channel addresses match on the host and the BARR/CHANNEL-IN configuration.

The channel state remains in the Waiting state

Cause: The Waiting state should only appear on the console for an instant. This state indicates you are waiting on a response from the printer. If there is a problem and a printer response is not received, the connection will wait indefinitely. When this problem occurs, the connection will be started, and the network state will be Connected.

Solution: First, verify that there is not a problem with the physical printer (for example, a paper jam). If there is not a problem with the physical printer and it is ready, then restart the connection to resume printing. If this does not reset the printer, cancel the Functional Sub-System (FSS) associated with this printer on the host. (Contact your host programmer for more information.) To continue troubleshooting this problem, capture a channel trace and a network trace that captures an instance of this problem. Use the Diagnostics Utility to gather the diagnostics file and send it to Barr Systems Technical Support for further analysis.
