Manually registering a service

If you receive an error message that a specific Barr service has not been installed, you can manually register the service. Complete the following steps to register a service.

The system registry contains information about how your computer runs, and your computer might not work if there is an error in your registry. If you are unfamiliar with the system registry, we do not recommend that you perform this procedure. Please contact Barr Systems Technical Support and reference this topic to be walked through this procedure.

  1. Open the MS-DOS prompt.

  2. Change your directory to the folder where the Barr program file is located. By default, Barr program files are stored in the \\Program Files\Barr\Spooler\EXE folder, unless another location is specified during installation.

  3. Enter the following command at the command prompt.

service program file /regserver

  1. Type the appropriate program file name for service program file. For example, you would type rje.exe/regserver to register the BARR RJE service.

Adding a user to the local administrative group

Use the following procedure to add a user to the administrative group using the Windows user utility.

  1. Open the Windows user utility.

  2. Click Add. The Add New User dialog box displays.

  3. Enter the User name and Domain, or click Browse to select a user.

  4. Click Next.

  5. Set the level of access by selecting Other, and then selecting Administrators from the drop-down list.

  6. Click Finish.

  7. Click OK to close the user utility.

Setting up a network connection

To set up a network connection, you must specify the user account type and be logged on to the same user account specified during installation. Complete the following steps to find out what account was entered during installation.

  1. Open the Services utility.

  2. Select the BARR Print Utility service, and on the menu bar select Action | Properties.

  3. Select the Log On tab. The account specified under Log on as is the user that can access the network printers, assuming they have valid user rights in the Barr Enterprise Print Server. If a system account is selected, we recommend you uninstall and then reinstall the software selecting the user account type. If you are unable to uninstall and reinstall the software, you can configure the service to log on as a user account.
