This topic contains solutions to common problems that you might experience with services.
Cause: The system operates slower when Barr services are configured to start automatically. Before the Barr services can successfully log in, the Novell client must attach to the Novell server or tree and complete its drive mappings. The logon will fail if the Barr services attempt to log in before the Novell client is ready.
Solution: One of the following two methods can be used to solve this problem.
Configure the Barr services to start manually. Once the system is running, manually start the Barr services. Advanced users also can create a .BAT file using the NET START <service> command and add the file to the startup group.
In the Windows registry, add a dependency to the Barr Message service for the Novell client service. In most cases, the dependency is needed for the Novell Workstation Manager (WM) service. The registry entry can be found in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE | SYSTEM | CurrentControlSet | Services. With this solution, the Barr Enterprise Print Server will be unable to start if there is a problem with the Novell client.
The previous solution requires you to use the Windows
Registry Editor. The system registry contains information about how your
computer runs, and your computer might not work if there is an error in
your registry. If you are unfamiliar with the Registry Editor, we do not
recommend that you perform this procedure. Please contact
Barr Systems Technical Support and reference this topic to be walked through
this procedure.
Cause: By default, the installation sets the BARR Print Utility service to start automatically. The BARR Print Utility service will start the BARR SpoolCore service. Once you change the BARR SpoolCore service to start automatically, the Spool Window in some systems will stop responding unless the BARR Print Utility service is set to start manually. Starting the Print Utility service manually is not desirable in most situations because manual intervention would be required for automatic spooling.
Solution: Complete the following steps.
Make sure the Print Utility service is set to start manually.
From Print Utility's Automatic Spooling tab, disable each of the automatic spooling folders by clearing the Enabled check box.
From the Services utility, set the BARR Print Utility service to start automatically and BARR SpoolCore service to start manually.
Restart your computer.
From the Print Utility's Automatic Spooling tab, enable each of the automatic spooling folders by selecting the Enabled check box.
Click OK twice. The Spool Window will now open properly and both services will start automatically each time you restart the computer.
Cause: You might not have the appropriate rights to manage the BARR SpoolCore service from the Spool Window.
Solution: Have an administrator assign you access rights to stop the BARR SpoolCore service from the Spool Window. Members of the Administrators group who do not have the necessary Barr access rights to manage the BARR SpoolCore service from the Spool Window, can manually stop the service from the Services utility.
Cause: An incorrect user name and password might have been used during installation or the service has not been configured as a user account.
Solution: Verify the Barr service is configured to log on as a user account and that the domain, account, and password values are correct.
