BARR/PRINT to Metacode booklet

3. Configure BARR/PRINT to Metacode

The following sections will guide you through the necessary steps for configuring BARR/PRINT to Metacode. Follow these steps to configure BARR/PRINT to Metacode for printing from TCP/IP networks through the LPR protocol or from LANs through a shared directory. Refer to the online help for more information.

3.1 Add a Printer

Follow these steps to add a BARR/PRINT to Metacode printer.

  1. From the Windows taskbar, click Start, select Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  2. Double-click the BARR/PRINT to Metacode Printers icon. This opens the BARR/PRINT to Metacode Printers Manager.

  3. Select Add a new BARR/PRINT to Metacode printer and click Next.

  4. If this is the first printer to be added, it will be based on the Standard printer configuration. If you wish to base the new printer on an existing printer, select a printer from the list. Click Next.

  5. In the Printer name field, enter a name for the printer.

  6. Choose your printer model from the Printer model drop-down list. Click Next.

  7. If you wish to track the amount of printing in a specific department, enter the name of the department in the Department name field. The software can then be configured to generate an accounting report. If you do not plan to use this feature, leave the field blank. Click Next.

  8. Select Add port to define a new port.

To modify an existing port, select a port from the Ports list and click Configure port. Refer to the online help for more information.

3.2 Add a Port

Follow these steps to add a BARR/PRINT to Metacode printer port. You must choose whether to add a port for printing from TCP/IP networks through the LPR protocol or from LANs through a shared directory.

  1. From the BARR/PRINT to Metacode Port Monitor dialog box, enter a name for the new port in the Port name field. The port name can contain up to 20 characters.

  2. Select the Type of port you are adding and click Next. The port types supported by the Barr Enterprise Print Server are TCP/IP remote printing (LPR) and Shared directory.

Add a TCP/IP Remote Printing (LPR) Port

  1. In the Host field, enter the host name or the IP address of the host that will receive the print jobs. This field is required.

The host name can be as many as 15 characters. The IP address must be composed of four groups of up to 3 numeric digits (ranging from 0 to 255) separated by a period.

  1. In the Remote Printer field, enter the host print queue name (up to 30 characters) to which BARR/PRINT to Metacode will send print jobs. This name must match the custom queue name when you configure LPD in the Barr Enterprise Print Server (see section 4.3) or when you enter a session name in DOS (see section 6.1). For the purpose of this example, enter Metacode as the remote printer. Click Next.

  2. In the User ID field, enter the user ID that will be sent with print jobs. Some hosts display this information to identify the files that have been received.

  3. Select Include banner page if your print jobs will include banner pages. Enabling this option is recommended only if it is required for the host to interpret the Class field.

This banner page is inserted by the host and is not related to the banner inserted by BARR/PRINT to Metacode.

  1. In the Class field, specify the class of the files to be sent. TCP/IP hosts may use this field differently depending on how the files were sent using the LPR protocol. Check your TCP/IP host configuration to determine the appropriate field value.

  2. Select Transparent as the Transfer mode. This will send print jobs to the print queue without being processed by the host. Click Next.

  3. A dialog box will summarize your port configuration. Click Back to change any settings or click Finish if the settings are correct.

  4. From the Adding Printer dialog box, click Next. If you wish to configure the printer you have added, click Configure. The printer can also be configured later.

Add a Shared Directory Port

  1. In the Output directory field, specify the directory to which print jobs will be sent. This directory must match the directory specified when you configure the print server (see chapter 5 for Windows NT or chapter 7 for DOS). You can type the path of the directory, choose a directory from the drop-down list, or click Browse to locate the directory. Click Next.

To help LAN users put their files in the correct folders, you might want the folder name to indicate the file type (that is, Metacode).

  1. Select one of the following options to name the output file. Click Next.

  1. A dialog box will summarize the port configuration. Click Back to change any settings or click Finish if the settings are correct.

  2. From the Adding Printer dialog box, click Next. If you wish to configure the printer you have added, click Configure. The printer also can be configured later.

3.3 Configure a Port

Because a profile was developed specifically for use by Barr software, configuring the printer port is a simple process.

  1. Select the Job Format tab.

  2. In the Profile field, select BP2META S/370 (Byte).

  3. Select the Print Job tab.

  4. Under Use RSTACK, select At the end of job only and then click Apply.

  5. Click Close to finish adding the printer.

3.4 Send a JSL File

After adding and configuring the printers on your workstation, you must send the BARR/PRINT to Metacode JSL file to each physical printer. The JSL file is supplied with the product and, when compiled, it generates the BARR/PRINT to Metacode JDL.

Before sending the JSL, make sure that all printer configuration parameters correspond to the printer startup JDL. That is, the PDL parameters specified by clicking Configure on the Printer tab must correspond to the printer startup JDL parameters. When specific PDL settings are changed, you must send the BARR/PRINT to Metacode JSL again.

Follow these steps to send the JSL file.

  1. From the Windows taskbar, click Start, select Settings, and then click Printers.

  2. Right-click the name of the printer to which you want to send the JSL file, and select Properties.

  3. From the Printer tab, click Configure to configure the PDL settings. Configuration settings will depend on your print environment. Click OK.

To save changes to the PDL settings, you must click OK in this dialog box and then click Apply in the BARR/PRINT to Metacode Printer Properties dialog box.

  1. To send the JSL file, click Send JSL.

If you do not want banner pages to be printed when sending the BARR/PRINT to Metacode JSL to the printer, you should disable the Use banner option on the Print Job tab of the Printer Properties dialog box.

  1. A confirmation window will appear. Click Yes to send the JSL file. A message will appear indicating that the JSL and the BPFORM font have been sent.

The BPFORM.FNT font is used by BARR/PRINT to Metacode to underline text, and the font must be on the printer disk for printing with BARR/PRINT to Metacode. This font is sent together with the JSL when you click Send JSL on the Printer tab. Once sent, it will be resident in the printer.

  1. After sending the JSL file to the printer, it must be compiled so that the BARR/PRINT to Metacode JDL can be generated. To compile the file, issue the PDL BP2MON command from the printer. This will generate the BP2MON.JDL file.
